What it is
A bleaching agent that works on natural enamel.
Whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to break down the compounds that cause surface and deeper staining in tooth enamel. It changes the shade of your existing natural teeth — it doesn't add material to them the way bonding or veneers do.
Because it only affects natural tooth structure, whitening won't change the color of an existing crown, filling, or veneer, which is something worth planning around if you have any of those already in your smile.
Results vary by starting shade and the cause of the discoloration.
When it may be appropriate
Good for surface staining. Not a fix for everything.
Whitening tends to work well for staining caused by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, or the gradual yellowing that comes with age. It's often a sensible first step before considering something more involved.
Some discoloration — from certain medications, an old injury to a tooth, or a naturally grey tooth shade — doesn't respond well to whitening. In those cases, the dentist may talk with you about bonding or veneers instead, depending on what's actually causing the color.
