Fluoride can help strengthen tooth enamel and support its natural ability to repair early damage. Whether professional fluoride treatment is useful for you depends on your individual cavity risk and oral health, which is why we don't offer it as a routine add-on to every appointment.
What it is
Supporting enamel's own ability to repair itself.
Enamel is constantly losing and regaining minerals in response to the food, drinks, and bacteria in your mouth. Fluoride helps that remineralization process along, making enamel more resistant to the acid attacks that lead to cavities.
Professional fluoride treatment is a more concentrated, in-office application, distinct from the fluoride found in toothpaste and tap water that most patients already get some benefit from daily.
When it may be appropriate
Some patients benefit more than others.
Patients with a higher risk of cavities, dry mouth, exposed root surfaces from gum recession, a history of frequent decay, or certain orthodontic or restorative circumstances may see more benefit from professional fluoride treatment than a patient with a low cavity risk and consistently healthy checkups.
Whether professional fluoride treatment is useful depends on an individual patient's cavity risk and oral health — which is something we assess at your visit, not something we assume.
Why the evaluation matters
Cavity risk isn't the same for every patient.
Two patients with similar brushing habits can have very different cavity risk, depending on saliva flow, diet, existing dental work, and how their teeth are positioned. That's part of what we're assessing during a routine cleaning and exam.
Recommending fluoride treatment for a patient who doesn't need it isn't a service to them. Recommending it for a patient whose risk factors actually call for it can meaningfully help protect their enamel.
What patients can expect
A quick, straightforward application.
When fluoride treatment is recommended, it's typically applied directly to the teeth as part of a regular visit, adding only a few minutes to the appointment.
We'll explain why we think it's a good fit for you specifically, rather than presenting it as a standard part of every checkup.
Long-term considerations
Risk factors can change, so the recommendation can too.
A patient's cavity risk isn't fixed. Changes in medication, diet, saliva flow, or new dental work can shift whether fluoride treatment continues to make sense, which is part of why we reassess at routine visits rather than setting a fixed plan and leaving it unchanged for years.
